The cat descends from a desert animal: it feels thirst late and rarely drinks of its own accord. Fed on dry food alone, it lives with permanently concentrated urine.
That is the real issue in a neutered male, where concentrated urine encourages crystals. One pouch of wet food a day dilutes it appreciably, and it is the easiest measure to keep up over time.
An 85 g pouch is worth roughly 20 g of dry food, so take it off the ration or the weight gain is mechanical.
It is not compulsory, but it is the simplest way to raise its water intake, which matters in particular for a neutered male.
Most often because it comes straight from the fridge. Leave it twenty minutes at room temperature.
