Litter is the leading cause of house-soiling in cats. A cat going beside the tray is almost never taking revenge: nine times out of ten the tray is badly placed, too dirty, or the substrate displeases it.
Clumping litter forms lumps you lift out with a scoop, the best compromise between cost, odour and upkeep. Silica blocks odour for several days but crunches underfoot. Plant-based is the only one you can flush.
Allow five to seven centimetres depth: less and the cat cannot dig, more and it scatters the litter everywhere. And one tray per cat, plus one.
Lift the clumps daily and empty the tray every two weeks for clumping litter, monthly for silica.
Three: one per cat, plus one. That is the rule that prevents marking and soiling.
