Choosing litter without getting it wrong

Litter is the leading cause of house-soiling in cats. A cat going beside the tray is almost never taking revenge: nine times out of ten the tray is badly placed, too dirty, or the substrate displeases it.

Clumping litter forms lumps you lift out with a scoop, the best compromise between cost, odour and upkeep. Silica blocks odour for several days but crunches underfoot. Plant-based is the only one you can flush.

Allow five to seven centimetres depth: less and the cat cannot dig, more and it scatters the litter everywhere. And one tray per cat, plus one.
